Dr. Ghazala Javed is the Director (In-Charge) of the National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders (NRIUMSD), Hyderabad, a premier research institute under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The Institute is accredited by NABH and NABL, reflecting its commitment to quality in healthcare and scientific research.
With a distinguished professional career spanning more than 30 years in Unani medicine, research, public health, intellectual property, and international cooperation, Dr. Javed has held several key positions within CCRUM and the Ministry of Ayush. Since 2017, she has been associated with CCRUM Headquarters, where she served as a technical head/coordinator, overseeing the planning, implementation, coordination, and monitoring of research and development programmes in Unani medicine. Her responsibilities have encompassed fundamental research, drug standardisation, quality control, clinical research, and coordination and monitoring of research activities across peripheral institutes.
An alumna of Jamia Hamdard, Dr. Javed has an outstanding academic record, having been awarded a Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights and has received a WHO Fellowship in Managing Public Health Programs. She is also a trained bioethicist and completed a long-term training programme in bioethics jointly conducted by ICMR and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA.
Dr. Javed has authored/co-authored around 140 research papers in reputed national and international journals, contributed to more than 200 scientific forums, and edited or reviewed approximately 25 books. Her work reflects a multidisciplinary engagement with evidence-based Unani medicine, drug development and standardisation, clinical research, bioethics, intellectual property, traditional knowledge, and public health.
During her eight-year tenure (2009–2017) with the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, she contributed substantially to the international cooperation and global outreach of Ayush systems. She was involved in engagements with international organisations and regulatory bodies including WHO, WIPO, UNESCO, USFDA, and NHPD, particularly in relation to the Americas division. She has been nominated on multiple occasions as a WHO expert for various working groups and represented India at the Intergovernmental Committee meetings of WIPO on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions, as well as at COP-11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in relation to the Nagoya Protocol and Article 8(j) on Traditional Knowledge.
She also contributed to the development of the National Position Paper on Protection of Traditional Health Knowledge in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and served as an advisory member of the Forum for Indian Traditional Medicine (FITM) at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).
Dr. Javed was deputed as a Visiting Scholar in the Unani stream at the National Center for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi, USA, where she gained hands-on exposure to natural products research and interacted with experts from the USFDA.
Earlier in her career, she served as In-Charge of the Drug Standardisation Research Unit (DSRU), New Delhi, and worked at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), New Delhi, contributing to drug standardisation, clinical research, patient care, and healthcare services.
Among her notable distinctions, Dr. Javed was featured as “The Face of Unani” in the book India’s Most Powerful Women by Ms. Ahluwalia. The book was released by the Secretary-General of the WTO in Berlin, Germany, and was subsequently presented to the then Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Dr. Javed was invited as a special guest.
As the first woman to lead NRIUMSD, Hyderabad as Director (In-Charge), Dr. Javed is committed to strengthening the Institute as a centre of excellence in research, clinical care, education, innovation, and evidence-based Unani medicine, while advancing its national and international scientific visibility and contributing to the continued growth and global outreach of CCRUM and the Unani system of medicine.
