Under this programme, such rural and far-flung areas are covered as are predominantly inhabited by the weaker sections of the society and where healthcare facilities are either rare or none at all. The researchers of the institute make door-to-door surveys in these areas mainly to register research cases of different ailments. The researchers also provide free medical treatment to ailing people at their doorsteps, and thus serve as a potential source of healthcare delivery to the masses. The programme also aims to create awareness among the masses on preventive, promotive and curative aspects of healthcare through lectures, group meetings, distributing IEC material in local language for better outreach among weaker population. A total of 6,100 visits were made, 1,691 lectures were delivered, and 5,707 cases were referred for research/ further treatment under this programme as well as Mobile Clinical Research, School Health Programme, SRPP and SCSP.
Since the launch of this programme in 1984, the institute has so far covered 132 villages/ urban slums with a total population of over 29.1 lakh. Of them, 9.3 lakh persons belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 1.7 lakh persons belonged to Scheduled Tribes (ST) population. A total of over 1.7 lakh patients have been treated in the mobile OPD during these years. Besides, the institute’s Mobile Clinical Research Unit (MCRU) is also conducting weekly special clinics in CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad.
