National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders (NRIUMSD), Hyderabad (Formerly Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Hyderabad) is a decentralized Institute working under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) - an autonomous organization under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. It was established in December, 1971 under the erstwhile Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (CCRIMH), which was set up in 1969. On the split of the CCRIUMH into four independent Councils in 1978, the CRIUM, Hyderabad continued functioning under the CCRUM with the objective of undertaking scientific research on various aspects of Unani system of medicine. This Institute is being developed as a model institution of Unani medical research and training in the country, since it is having the vast research infrastructure and technical expertise for standardization, safety & efficacy evaluation and validation of Unani drugs and therapies. The Institute has been awarded the ISO 9001:2008 certification. The Institute’s Pharmacy has a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certificate for manufacture of research and other Unani drugs.

 

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient care, and the campus houses the Academic Blocks, Administrative Block, Hospital Building, Pharmacy, Drug Quality Testing Laboratory, Library, Survey & Cultivation of Medicinal Plants (SMP) Unit, Herbal Garden, Animal House, Guest House, Hostels, Residential Blocks and several other units. The Hospital has various OPDs and 85-bedded in-patient facility, and clinical services are provided to the patients from General OPD and Specialty OPDs for Skin Diseases, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), GIT & Hepato-biliary Disorders, Neurological & Psychiatric Disorders, Reproductive & Child Health (RCH) Care and Geriatric Care. Dietary and Nutritional advice are also provided to the patients with various disorders as per the Unani Classics along with modern perspective. The ‘Ilāj bi’l Tadbīr (Regimenal Therapy) Centre of the hospital has the facilities for massage, cupping, and exercises, which caters to the needs of the patients suffering from musculo-skeletal and neurological disorders. The hospital is also equipped with up to the mark Diagnostic Laboratories of Pathology, Biochemistry, and Radiology. Hospital also provides healthcare facilities to socioeconomically weaker groups at their door steps through Mobile Clinical Research (MCR) Unit.

 

The Institute has earned worldwide fame, particularly for the successful treatment of Baraṣ (vitiligo) and has over the years emerged as a premier Institute of Unani medical research in the country. The areas of research undertaken by the Institute include preclinical and clinical research, research on fundamental principles of Unani Medicine, drug standardization research, and survey & cultivation of medicinal plants. In order to achieve and maintain the highest levels of research excellence in the field of Unani medicine, the Institute also collaborates with premier scientific Institutions like NIPER, Hyderabad; ICMR-NIN, Hyderabad; and AIIMS, New Delhi.

 

The Institute offers Postgraduate Courses with 18 seats in two disciplines of Unani Medicine, namely, Moalajat (Medicine)-09 seats and Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology)-09 seats. The Institute is affiliated to Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal, Telangana State and follows the curriculum prescribed by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) as approved by the KNRUHS. Both the postgraduate departments manage practically all types of disease conditions, particularly skin disorders and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) with support from preclinical and para-clinical departments available at the Institute. Earlier, this institute also offered PhD courses with 6 seats in two disciplines of Unani Medicine, namely, Moalajat (03 seats) and Ilmul Advia (03 seats) in collaboration with Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). The Institute regularly organizes academic events like Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures by eminent scholars. Faculty members are deputed to various training programmes to update their technical and professional skills.

 

The web-based AYUSH-Hospital Information Management System (A-HMIS), a comprehensive, integrated information system developed by Ministry of AYUSH has been successfully implemented in the Institute’s hospital, in order to effectively manage all functions of healthcare delivery system, and for effective clinical documentation to improve health services with readily reference patient records in AYUSH facilities.

 

Recently, Institute’s hospital has been accredited by NABH. It is the first NABH accredited Unani hospital of the Council.
